The Real Time and Embedded Systems Laboratory mourns the untimely departure of a dear colleague. Jennifer Hou passed away on Dec. 2, 2007, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 43. Jennifer was a good friend, a distinguished colleague, an outstanding researcher, and a dedicated mother. She is survived by her son, Andrew, her parents, I-Chen and So-Chiu Hou, and her sister, Grace Hou. Jennifer received her Ph.D. degree in EECS from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1993. Over her research career, she made significant contributions to the fields of networking, wireless systems, and real-time computing. She joined UIUC in 2001 where she created the Illinois Network Design and Experimentation Group.  Jennifer made an indelible mark in the history of this department and the RTSL lab. We are deeply saddened at the loss of such a wonderful person, researcher, and friend.

  History and Accomplishments

Founded in the 1970s, the real-time system laboratory contributed significantly to the birth to the discipline. Origin of the most well-cited paper in real-time computing, the lab and its members changed real-time standards and established foundational theory such as generalized rate monotonic analysis and imprecise computations.
